Ramadan 2027 Zakat Timing: When to Pay

Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin around 17 February 2027 (pending moon sighting). Many Muslims pay their annual Zakat during this blessed month, drawn by the multiplied reward of good deeds. But there is a fiqh nuance worth understanding.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was described by Ibn Abbas:

“The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most generous of people, and he was even more generous in Ramadan when Jibril would meet him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1902)

Every voluntary good deed in Ramadan carries enhanced reward, and giving Zakat in this month amplifies the spiritual experience. Many charities also run their strongest campaigns in Ramadan, making distribution efficient.

But Zakat Is Due When the Hawl Completes

The critical point: Zakat is obligatory when your hawl ends, not when Ramadan arrives. If your hawl completes in Muharram or Shawwal, waiting until Ramadan actually means delaying an obligation — which is not permissible without valid reason.

Two correct approaches:

  1. Advance payment: most scholars allow paying Zakat before the hawl completes (as a prepayment). So if your hawl ends in Rajab, you may pay in Ramadan of the previous year.
  2. Set your hawl to Ramadan: if your hawl already falls in Ramadan, perfect — keep it there every year.

What is not allowed is to delay Zakat beyond its due date just to catch Ramadan.

Practical Plan for Ramadan 2027

  • Check your hawl date (your personal Zakat anniversary in the hijri calendar).
  • If it falls before 17 February 2027, pay on time.
  • If it falls in Ramadan 2027, pay then.
  • If it falls after Ramadan 2027 but you want to pay during Ramadan anyway, you may prepay — the majority of scholars (Hanafi, Shafi’i, Hanbali) permit this.

Night of Power Considerations

Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, is sought in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Allah says:

“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” (Quran 97:3)

Some Muslims aim to distribute Zakat on or just before the 27th night. This is a beautiful intention — but remember, fulfilling the obligation on time is more important than the date you choose within the permissible window.
